Dr. Harrell's specific interests include thyroid cancer, parathyroid disease, osteoporosis and adrenal disease. He has performed thyroid and parathyroid ultrasonography in his office
since 1992 and has been certified by the American College of Endocrinology in thyroid ultrasonography and ultrasound guided thyroid biopsy.

Dr. Harrell has worked hand in hand with the Endocrine Oncology Surgery Service at Imperial Point Medical Center since 2003 to build a widely recognized Endocrine Surgery Center supported by such technologies as intraoperative parathyroid hormone testing and intraoperative radioguided parathyroid localization.

Imperial Point has played a key role in bringing Minimally Invasive Radioguided Parathyroidectomy to Broward and Palm Beach counties. This procedure, along with intraoperative Parathyroid Hormone testing, allows us to perform curative parathyroid surgery in 15-30 minutes through a one-inch incision in selected patients with hyperparathyroidism. Previously, these patients were subjected to a two hour neck dissection through a three to five inch incision. Thus, curative parathyroid surgery can be offered safely to patients with complicated medical histories who cannot tolerate a long and complicated neck dissection.
