Knee Replacement for Women

For women requiring knee replacement surgery, Coral Springs Medical Center now offers a knee implant specifically designed to address a women's unique anatomy. In the past, knee replacements have been available in various sizes, but they were not made to accommodate the different knee shapes.

This gender-specific replacement has a shape that is better proportioned to fit a woman's anatomy and move like a woman's natural knee. To determine the size of the implant, a surgeon measures the end of the thigh bone near the knee from front to back and from side to side. The surgeon then selects the implant based on the front-to-back measurement because a woman's knee is usually narrower from side to side and more trapezoid-shaped than a man's knee.

“Everyone's bones are not the same, and it is wonderful to have a surgical approach geared towards the specific anatomy of a person's body,” said Dr. Richard Berkowitz, the first orthopaedic surgeon in Florida to perform the surgery using the Gender Specific Knee.
