Joseph M. Cobo was appointed to the Board of Commissioners in 2007 by Governor Charlie Crist. He is president and chief executive officer of Florida Medical Management Consultants, Inc. which he founded in 1978. His diversified experience in the field of health care management varies from solo groups to special consulting assignments in virtually every medical specialty. He has served as a consultant to HCA, Tenet, not-for-profit hospitals and other health systems in developing physician enhancement programs.
He has taught at the University of Miami Medical School, Department of Surgery, Orthopedics, Dermatology and Internal Medicine Residency programs. He has lectured at county medical societies as well as both national and international meetings for medical associations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Dermatology.
Commissioner Cobo has served in leadership positions for professional organizations and community not-for-profits boards. He has been president of the Society of Medical-Dental Management Consultants, The Institute of Certified Healthcare Consultants and most recently was elected president of the newly merged National Society of Certified Health Consultants. His community involvement includes serving on the board of the American Red Cross, United Way of Broward County, Broward Education Foundation, Emergency Medical Services and the City of Fort Lauderdale Insurance Advisory Board. He is Chair Elect of the Broward Education Foundation.
Commissioner Cobo is a frequent contributor of published articles to Medical Economics, Physician's Management and Florida Medical Review. He has also been interviewed by local, regional and national newspapers such as the American Medical Association's AMA News and the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Argus.
Commissioner Cobo and his wife, Sylvia, are residents of Fort Lauderdale. Their son and daughter are attending college at UCF and FSU respectively.
