Annual Quality Expo Allows Medical Staff, Leadership to Share Best Practices
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – Teams from across Broward Health came together to tout their dedicated efforts to problem solving, improving hospital processes and cost reduction at the 2014 Quality Expo at the Broward County Convention Center on Friday, February 14.
“All of the presenters in this year’s Quality Expo exhibited the remarkable enhancements that are being employed across the hospital system,” said Frank Nask, CEO of Broward Health. “All of the participants should be commended for their dedication to Broward health and improving our ability to deliver world-class healthcare to all.”
A panel of judges, including Ferdinand Richards III, MD, Rick Welsh, RN, CPHQ and Sally A. Forsberg, RNC, BSN, MBA, NEA-BC, CPHQ, CPC-H, reviewed the presentations and named winners in the storyboard and showcase categories. The event was held in conjunction with the annual Leadership Symposium, which allows for the Broward Health leadership teams to gather and share best practices.
The competition’s focus was to educate staff and leadership on the process improvement initiatives that have occurred throughout the Broward Health system over the past year. Attendees learned about system enhancements and ways to improve product lines and customer service capabilities.
Participation in this event rewards and recognizes team members for their outstanding efforts and contributions. Typically, team projects fall into the category of problem-solving or improvement/innovation.
Broward Health North (BHN) earned top honors in the presentation category. The team showed how BHN has worked to reduce total patient harm by 10 percent over the past year. The team exceeded that goal with a 23 percent reduction in incidents. As a result, the hospital was featured in a Florida Hospital Association video on best practices and BHN CEO Pauline Grant participated in a webinar presented by the American Hospital Association.
The winning storyboard team from Broward Health Medical Center implemented a consistent and standardized nursing orientation that meets the healthcare needs of our community while supporting the organizational goals. The new approach has increased retention by more than 14 percent and decreased the time spent in orientation by 20 percent, producing a cost savings of close to $300,000.
The showcase winners were:
Broward Health North - “Reducing Total Harm, Seeing the Big Picture”
