Broward Health Medical Center Receives Comprehensive Stroke Center Designation
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – Broward Health Medical Center (BHMC) has been recognized by the Agency for Healthcare Administration as a Comprehensive Stroke Center, making it part of an elite group of providers focused on complex stroke care. Comprehensive Stroke Centers are recognized as industry leaders and are responsible for setting the national agenda in highly-specialized stroke care.
Comprehensive Stroke Center designation recognizes hospitals that have state-of-the-art infrastructure, staff and training to receive and treat patients recovering from the most complex strokes. Requirements include having the most advanced imaging capabilities, 24/7 availability of specific treatments and staff with specialized education and competencies to care for patients.
"By achieving this comprehensive designation, BHMC has thoroughly demonstrated the greatest level of commitment to the care of its patients with a complex stroke condition,” says Calvin E. Glidewell Jr., chief executive officer at BHMC. “Certification is a voluntary process, and I commend everyone involved for successfully undertaking the challenge to elevate the standard of care for the community we serve.”
Comprehensive Stroke Center designation developed in collaboration with the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association and derived from the Brain Attack Coalition’s “Recommendations for Comprehensive Stroke Centers” (Stroke, 2005), “Metrics for Measuring Quality of Care in Comprehensive Stroke Centers” (Stroke, 2011) and on recommendations from a multidisciplinary advisory panel of experts in complex stroke care.
“BHMC is thoroughly committed to providing our patients with the highest quality stroke care based on current scientific research to ensure continuous improvement in care,” said James Cimera, MD, medical director of the stroke program at BHMC. “Comprehensive Stroke Center designation has given BHMC the opportunity to highlight the exceptional stroke care provided to patients and improved care for the benefit of our community.”
