Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – Broward Health Medical Center has received the Advanced Certification in Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) from The Joint Commission, becoming the first hospital in South Florida to receive this accreditation. The Joint Commission’s Advanced Certification for CABG recognizes hospitals that demonstrate exceptional patient and family-centered care and optimize the quality of life for patients with serious illnesses.

“In 1958, Broward Health Medical Center used the first electrocardiogram machine in Broward County, one of only two in the state of Florida. Broward Health had the foresight to start an extensive cardiac care program at a time when very few hospitals did so,” said Kenneth Herskowitz, MD, medical director of cardiovascular surgery and program director of disease specific certification for CABG at Broward Health Medical Center. “Now, in 2013, The Joint Commission has added its accolades to this unique program that improves the lives of Broward Health patients.”

Coronary artery bypass grafting is a type of surgery that improves blood flow to the heart. Surgeons use CABG to treat people who have severe coronary heart disease.  This collaborative approach uses a team of doctors, nurses and other specialists who offer their support to improve quality of life for patients and their families.

“Our organization always had an outstanding cardiac program,” said Michael A. Chizner, MD, chief medical director of The Heart Center of Excellence at Broward Health Medical Center. “So, the decision to pursue certification seemed like a natural next step.”

To receive the Advanced Certification CAGB accreditation, Broward Health Medical Center passed onsite certification reviews conducted by cardiac experts. The certification decision was based on the evaluation of standards, clinical practice guidelines and performance measurement activities.

“This designation is a great honor, and we are proud to be the first certified CABG center in South Florida,” Dr. Chizner said.
