Thursday, August 22, 2013 - Broward Health Mobilize to Immunize Campaign Immunizes More Than 200 Children

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – Broward Health Community Health Services (BHCHS), the Florida Panthers’ Redline Lady Panthers and mascot Stanley C. Panther and Miami Dolphins mascot T.D., in partnership with the Broward County Supervisor of Elections, hosted a Back-to-School Summer Immunization Pep Day at the Cora E. Braynon Family Health Center, formerly known as the Seventh Avenue Family Health Center, on Friday, Aug. 16. More than 50 children received necessary immunizations, as well as physicals, screenings, haircuts and school supplies.

As the DJ pumped music into the health center and pro team mascots Stanley C. Panther and T.D. danced with children, families and staff, Broward Health clinicians were busy offering required immunizations and school physicals for the upcoming school year. Local hairstylists were on site to give families free haircuts, and while waiting, parents were offered free health screenings that included blood pressure, diabetes and HIV.

The Summer Immunization Pep Day event was the culmination of BHCHS’ Mobilize To Immunize, a series of summer immunization fairs that began in June. Over the course of the summer, BHCHS hosted 13 immunization events at its school health centers and
Cora E. Braynon Family Health Center, and vaccinated 224 youths. Immunizations safeguard against preventable diseases such as pertussis (whooping cough), measles, rubella, influenza and other infectious diseases.

“The Summer Immunization Pep Day was our 2013 Mobilize To Immunize Banner event,” said Jasmin Shirley, vice president of Broward Health Community Health Services. “Through this event, Broward Health ensured that children are healthy and immunized, and with the help of our community partners, these kids were made ready to return to school and succeed.”
