Imperial Point Association’s Picnic

Margie Garland, Community Relations Manager, IPMC,  was recognized for supplying tables and chairs at the picnic for board members of the Imperial Point (neighborhood) Association, and hospital staff Linda Crawford, Dave Elliott, Susan Raposeiro, and Roosevelt Morence for the delivery and pickup of the additional table and chairs.  Thanks were also extended to Steve Frederickson for ice delivery.  (Imperial Point Association, December/January)

 

CECH Patients Get the Scoop on a Mischievous Cat

Todd Friedman and Megan Andrews, a husband and wife team wrote My Secret Life as Peanut.  The book is based on the true story and shenanigans of their next door neighbor’s cat who lived a secret life away from her owners during the day.  Chris Evert Children’s Hospital patients were treated to a free autographed copy of the book and a tattoo of Peanut’s likeness on their arm.  (Family Magazine, January 2010)

 

Hospital-Based Fitness Center Offers Individual & Corporate Wellness Programs

Cara Perrin, Exercise Psychologist, Health Screening Coordinator, and Personal Trainer at The Wellness Center at Broward General Medical Center wrote of the many attributes offered at the center.  The Wellness Center has something for everyone including more than 30 fitness classes, several clinical programs such as Cardiac Rehab and a Diabetes program, and general programs such Kids Fitness, Massage Therapy, Weight Loss and more.  (GoRiverwalk, January 2010)

 

Broward Health Facilities Join National Project

The National Association of Public Hospitals (NAPH) selected Broward Health’s Imperial Point and North Broward medical centers to participate in the first phase of the Patient Safety Initiative at America’s Public Hospitals.  The initiative is a newly launched joint effort between NAPH and the National Patient Safety Foundation and is funded by the Kaiser Permanente Community Benefit Fund.  IPMC and NBMC were two of only 35 hospitals selected nationwide.  (Advance For Nurses, January 18, 2010)

 

Missionary Died in the Place She Loved

Jeanne Acheson-Munos, a missionary from Indianapolis, died in the rubble of her apartment building flattened from the earthquake.  Her husband survived and is in the intensive care unit at North Broward Medical Center.  (indystar.com, January 19, 2010)

 

New Medical School in South Florida

Florida International University’s new medical school has signed an affiliation agreement with Baptist Health South Florida – a partnership that will increase the number of doctors doing their residencies in South Florida.  Hospitals in Broward County that would benefit listed Broward General Medical Center, Chris Evert Children’s Hospital, Coral Springs Medical Center, and Imperial Point Medical Center.  (topix.com, January 19, 2010)

 

Broward General Opens Doors to Earthquake Victims

A University of Miami physician stated that Broward General Medical Center opened it doors to treating victims of the earthquake regardless of health insurance or ability to pay.  (WTVJ Ch. 6, January 19, 2010)

 

Broward Physician a Hero

Georges Boutin, MD, orthopedic surgeon, Imperial Point Medical Center, was named a hero for his efforts in saving earthquake victims in Haiti.  Boutin, his daughter, and his son-in-law, all surgeons, used a hack saw and other tools to perform amputations in order to save lives.  (New Times, January 19, 2010)

Medical Supplies to Haiti

What’s Going Around

At Broward Health Weston, Noemi Rivera, MD, Medical Director, Urgent Care Center, has seen an increased number of patients with a sore throat.  Patients with viral sore throats can use over-the-counter pain relievers and spray anesthetic to ease the symptoms.  (WPLG Ch. 10, January 20, 2010)

 

Broward Health Foundation’s Golf Tournament Raises Nearly $140,000

The Pediatrix Medical Group 18th Annual Broward Health Foundation Golf Tournament raised close to $140,000 making this the most successful golf tournament in its 18-year history.  The funds will go toward the $60 million renovation and expansion of the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital.  (Sun-Sentinel, Society Broward, January 20, 2010)

 

A Better Night’s Sleep Can Help Diabetes

In an article written by Dr. Glenn R. Singer, Director of the Sleep Disorder Center at Broward General Medical Center and Broward Health Weston, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is significantly undiagnosed among obese individuals with type 2 diabetes.  A

study called Sleep Ahead found nearly 87 percent of participants reported symptoms of sleep apnea but were never diagnosed.  Evaluation and treatment of sleep can be an important part of diabetes management.  (destinationdiabetes.americandiabeteswholesale.com, January 20, 2010)

 

Haiti Missionary is Hospitalized in Broward

Trauma Medical Director Dr. Ivan Puente at Broward General Medical Center is treating Erin Kloos, a missionary worker in Haiti when the earthquake struck and 23 other patients hurt in the quake.  (CBS Ch. 4, January 21, 2010)

 

CBS News Anchor Katie Couric Visits Earthquake Survivor at Broward General

Katie Couric visited earthquake survivor Erin Kloos, 26 years old, at Broward General Medical Center.  Kloos, who is being hospitalized for severe injuries she suffered during the earthquake, was working in Haiti as a volunteer, caring for orphaned children near Port-au-Prince.  Couric called her a hero.  (CBS Evening News, January 21, 2010)

 

Florida Hospitals Receiving Center for Haitians

South Florida hospitals including Broward General Medical Center are receiving Haitian earthquake patients. As this time Broward General has 42 Haitian patients.  According to Trish Power, hospital public relations, three patients are in critical condition, eight are in serious condition and the remaining patients are not serious.  At least four children have been admitted and the hospital is continuing to receive patients in small groups.  (Vanguardia.com, January 22, 2010)

 

Proton Therapy

About a dozen hospitals nationwide are planning to get proton therapy systems including Broward Health in Fort Lauderdale.  The only place in Florida now offering proton therapy is the University of Florida Proton Therapy Institute in Jacksonville.  (South Florida Business Journal, Orlando Business Journal, January 22, 2010)

South Florida Receives More Injured Evacuees
