Monday, July 10, 2006 - IPMC Recognized for Commitment to Protecting Environment
Broward County Commissioners recently recognized Imperial Point Medical Center (IPMC) at its annual Emerald Awards ceremony, which honors businesses that excel in waste reduction, recycling, improved operating practices and other “green” strategies to reduce pollution and waste. IPMC was recognized in the category of Innovative Procedures/Process Improvement for a large business. Additionally, IPMC was awarded “Environmental Business of the Year.” Last year, IPMC received the Emerald Award for Pollution Prevention/Hazardous Waste Reduction for a large business.

”We are thrilled to have this honor for the second year in a row,” said Dottie Mancini, chief executive officer at IPMC. "This award validates our strong commitment to protecting the environment as we provide high quality care for our patients.”

Under the direction of Steve Fredrickson, facilities and environmental services manager at IPMC, some of the innovative procedures put in place included:
  • Installation of an automated irrigation system that monitors flow and shuts the system down if there is a break
  • A new spray polyurethane foam roofing system with high reflectivity to reduce cooling costs and improve comfort
  • Reductions in biomedical waste, hazardous wastes and continued recycling on several waste streams
  • Tied in pumps, motors, variable frequency drives into the energy management system to provide consumption reductions to offset the increase in electric costs
The Emerald Award was created by the Broward County Board of Commissioners and the Environmental Protection Department to recognize businesses that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to protecting the environment. The Broward County Environmental Protection Department is urging more businesses to participate in its Emerald Award program and encourages consumers to patronize businesses that have earned Emerald Award certification.
