More than 60 expectant moms attend inaugural group baby shower event

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – In the spirit of true collaboration, Broward Health Community Health Services (BHCHS) joined forces with Community Access Center and other local partners to host a Power Shower, a unique group baby shower, for more than 60 expectant local moms last Friday, December 6.

“This is a fun, new effort by BHCHS to work with our local partners to provide important prenatal and postnatal healthcare information for expectant mothers,” said Jasmin Shirley, vice president of BHCHS.

The event consisted of informative lectures on breastfeeding, dental care, shaken baby syndrome and much more, including a visit from State Rep. Representative Gwyndolen Clarke-Reed. In order to meet the specific needs of the community members, the lectures were held in Spanish and Creole. Participants were treated to lunch and gift bags to help with their new arrivals.

“I enjoyed getting to hear from the other moms and the experiences they go through,” said Lucresia Gomez, whose husband is also excited to welcome a boy into their family. “He’s happy that we will each have a partner,” she said as she hugged her young daughter.

The next Power Shower will be held in February for English-speaking mothers-to-be.
