Thursday, February 06, 2014 - The Heart Center of Excellence at Broward Health Medical Center Offers New Implantable Defibrillator for Patients at Risk of Sudden Cardiac Arrest
Fort Lauderdale, FL – The Heart Center of Excellence at Broward Health Medical Center is one of the first hospitals in South Florida to offer the Boston Scientific S-ICD® System, the world's first and only commercially-available subcutaneous implantable defibrillator (S-ICD) for the treatment of patients at risk for sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

Recent estimates show that approximately 850,000 people in the United States are at risk of SCA, an abrupt loss of heart function. Most episodes are caused by the rapid and/or chaotic activity of the heart, known as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation.

The S-ICD System provides a new solution for both physicians and patients. It sits just below the skin and does not have to touch the heart and blood vessels, unlike traditional transvenous implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).

“This new system allows patients with no vascular access for lead insertion to be offered effective and proven protection from life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms),” said Dr Ahmed Osman, cardiac electrophysiologist and medical director of the BHMC’s Electrophysiology laboratory. “It is also a very attractive option for young patients at risk, such as those who have hereditary sudden death syndromes.”

The S-ICD System has two components. The pulse generator powers the system, monitors heart activity and delivers a shock, if needed. The electrode helps sense the cardiac rhythm and serves as a pathway for shock delivery, when necessary. Implantation can be done using only anatomical landmarks which removes the need for fluoroscopy (an X-ray procedure that is required for standard leads to be placed in the heart).

To date, more than 2,000 devices have been implanted in patients around the world.
