Thursday, May 08, 2014 - Broward Health Imperial Point is Officially ‘Senior Friendly’

Formal Designation Reflects Hospital’s Efforts to Improve Care for Older Adult Patients

Fort Lauderdale, Fla.  – Broward Health Imperial Point (BHIP) is pleased to announce that it has achieved ‘Senior Friendly’ status for its NICHE (Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders) program.

NICHE is the premier designation indicating a hospital's commitment to excellence in the care of patients who are 65 years of age and older. The status level recognizes BHIP for having implemented the Geriatric Resource Nurse (GRN) model; implemented aging-sensitive policies; and included the input of patients, families and community-based providers in the planning and implementation of initiatives. The GRN is an online course designed for use by NICHE members who educate nurses in best practices for hospitalized older adults.

The ‘Senior Friendly’ status, the second highest of four possible program levels, was assigned to BHIP following a rigorous program evaluation of the current state and future goals of the hospital’s program.

“This senior friendly status designation reflects the hospital’s resolve to continue providing patient-focused care for older adults,” said Alice Taylor, BHIP CEO.  “Our participation in the NICHE program reflects our commitment to promoting better outcomes, positive experiences and improved care for our older patients.”

The annual program evaluation is used by hospitals to determine the level of their NICHE program. The evaluation benchmarks program progress year-to-year, targets future care initiatives and provides data to use in gaining and sustaining support from institution stakeholders.

“Broward Health Imperial Point’s evaluation demonstrated a tremendous ability to meet the needs of the older adult patient,” says Barbara Bricoli, MPA, managing director of NICHE. “The hospital’s aggressiveness in marshaling geriatric nursing resources and support to enhance care indicates it is on the way to achieving the prestigious Exemplar status soon.”
