BGMC Physicians and Ft. Lauderdale Fire Rescue Save Man's Life
Ft. Lauderdale, FL – The City of Ft. Lauderdale awarded Moshe Stav, M.D., a trauma surgeon at Broward General Medical Center, Nabil El Sanadi, M.D., EMS medical director and chief of emergency medicine for Broward Health and more than 20 Ft. Lauderdale firefighters and paramedics with a certificate of recognition for saving the life of a 68-year-old man.
The heroic act took place when Ft. Lauderdale Fire Rescue received a call to a construction site where a 68-year-old man was trapped underneath a dump truck. The 80,000 pound truck had backed up and pinned the man beneath the truck crushing his legs.
Paramedics arrived on the scene and provided lifesaving medical interventions while firefighters attempted to lift and stabilize the vehicle off of the patient’s crushed extremities.
Dr. El Sanadi was contacted and immediately responded to the scene. “If lifting the truck was not a possibility, a field amputation would have been necessary to save this man’s life,” said El Sanadi. “Everyone involved in this rescue mission is a true hero.”
It took 45 minutes of well-planned teamwork to move the truck before a successful rescue was achieved. The man was then transported to Broward General Medical Center’s emergency department where Dr. Stav had prepared to operate.
“This patient survived a traumatic and life-threatening injury because of the quick action, training and teamwork of these outstanding professionals,” said El Sanadi.
