Monday, July 27, 2009 - NBMC Hosts 4th Annual Senior Dance Stars Final Competition on August 7

– 10 Couples or Singles Finalists, All Aged 65 and Older, to Compete – 

WHO/WHAT: North Broward Medical Center (NBMC) will present its “4th Annual Senior Dance Stars” final competition, featuring 10 couples or singles finalists, all over age 65. The contestants, who were selected from over 100 seniors who auditioned throughout Broward County, will show their best moves while performing dances such as the rumba, cha-cha, jitterbug and more (complete contestant bio details listed below). Over 500 people are expected to attend the event.

CBS4 Anchor Eliott Rodriguez will emcee the event. The panel of judges include Lissette Gonzalez, CBS4 morning weather anchor; Phyllis J. Neuberger, writer/journalist with the Pompano Pelican; Nancy Vallejo, founder and president, Solutions by Nancy, NBMC CEO Pauline Grant; Dr. H. Murray Todd, acclaimed neurologist and medical director of the NBMC Memory Disorder Center, an outpatient diagnostic facility offering a multi-disciplinary approach to determine the cause of memory impairment; and Sara Howley, vice president of Broward Health Communications & Marketing.

Event sponsors are CBS4, Stryker, First Path, Physician Health Choice and Phoenix Physicians.

Dr. Todd will speak briefly on the importance of seniors keeping their brains active with activities such as dance to help prevent degenerative neurological diseases including memory loss. Dr. Bruce Janke, medical director of NBMC Joint Replacement Center, will give information on the latest advances to keep the “joints jumping.”  

Five hundred dollars will be awarded to the first place winner(s), $250 to second place, and $150 to third place.

Dancer Bios

#1 – Herbert Moss (Coconut Creek), 84 yrs. old retired ophthalmological physician who has been dancing for about 6 years at Gold Coast Ballroom.
Billie Cohen (Sunrise), 84 yrs. old retired nurse.  She has been dancing for over 15 years.  Met Herbert at Gold Coast – and she discovered a whole new life.

#2 – Zeida Mesa (Margate), 72 yrs. old who works at a senior center taking care of Alzheimers’ patients. She began dancing in her mother’s womb! Will perform a SOLO to Afro-Cuban music. Zeida has been married for 52 yrs. has 4 children, 9 grandchildren and 4 great-stepgrandchildren.

#3 – Helvia & Jose Encarnacion (Coconut Creek), she is 75 ½ and he is 81. Originally from Puerto Rico, this couple began dancing when they met and it’s been a long and happy relationship. They dance as often as possibly at every venue available throughout the community.

#4 – Sandy Meyers (Deerfield Bch), 75 yrs. old recreation programs director who has been dancing since she was 9 in Brooklyn.
Larry Moskowitz (Deerfield Bch), 81 yrs. old retired from the communications and television arena. He has been dancing since his retirement in 1993. He did not have a “partner” at the auditions...and Sandy offered, after dancing with another gentleman, to dance with him. It was a terrific dancing match!!

#5 – Tony and Linda Murguia (Cooper City). She is 69 and he is 72 and they have been married for 50 years. They started dancing together while dating...and won all kinds of dancing awards back when there were dances at the Bayfront Park Auditorium. Tony is a retired firefighter (30 yrs in Dade).  Linda is retired as an executive administrative assistant at banks and airlines.  She is currently one of the “Golden Oldies” dancers for the Miami Heat!!

#6 – Larry Klein (Davie), 77 years old and Faith Macnow (Davie), 84 years YOUNG.  Larry is legally deaf and considers Faith his “ears” when dancing.  Both of them have enjoyed dancing all of their lives, including dancing in the Catskills Mountains in NY.  They are both originally from Bronx, NY.  Larry retired as an antique dealer and Faith had a very successful real estate career in Florida and the Bahamas.

#7 – Evelyn Cohen (Delray Beach), 88 yrs. old and originally from Philadelphia – she is a great-grandmother with a great sense of humor and style.
Jay Dominguez (West Palm Beach), 65 yrs. old and originally from Cuba.  Jay is a retired CPA who started dancing about 5 years ago with his wife at Gold Coast.  He met Evelyn there and they entered the contest together because Evelyn needed a partner.

#8 – Mitzi Rice (Deerfield Bch), 71 years old who started dancing at 9 in Waltham, Mass.  She retired as a medical assistant for John Hancock and has lived in South Florida for the past 8 ½ yrs.  Mitzi performs with the Broadway Zigfield Follies, a local not-for-profit dance troupe that donates entertainment at charity events.
Francois Szony (Davie), 83 yrs. old Hungarian who retired as a professional dancer.  He performed for many years at Addagio in Las Vegas, London, Copenhagen, etc.  He has lived and danced in South Florida for the past 20 years.

#9 – Mickey Cohen (Coconut Creek), 88 yrs. old retired furrier – Originally from Brooklyn, NY, he has made his home in South Florida for the past 40 yrs.  Mickey received a Purple Heart in WWII – dancing has helped him overcome injuries and kept his spirits up.
Michelle Iannelli (Margate), over 65...is originally from Paris, France, she moved to America at 14 because her father worked at the United Nations. Michelle is a French teacher when not dancing with Mickey at GoldCoast Ballroom.

#10 – Stephen and Helen Jubinski (Deerfield Bch). He is 81 and she is 80 and they are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary this year. Originally from Pennsylvania, this couple is well-traveled because Stephen is a career Navy man.  Their favorite ports of call include Australia and Singapore.  After living in Hawaii for 20 years to decided to move stateside (Florida) to be closer to their children and their families. They began dancing when they got married…and did the polka while watching the Lawrence Welk Show!
