Friday, October 02, 2009 - Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services calls BGMC’s Adult Liver Transplant Fully Compliant

Ft. Lauderdale, FL - After an on-site survey by the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration (AHCA) in June, Broward General Medical Center (BGMC) has received notice that its adult liver transplant program is fully compliant with the conditions of participation by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

The on-site survey resulted from new regulations issued by the Department of Health and Human Services in 2007, which gave CMS responsibility for monitoring compliance with Medicare Conditions of Participation. Previous to 2007, Medicare participation for transplant programs was monitored by the End-Stage Renal Disease Conditions for Coverage or the National Coverage Determinations.

“As the only liver transplant program in Broward County it is important that we stay up-to-date on all compliancy regulations,” said Audra Hutton Lopez, MSN, ARNP, FNP-C, CNS, nurse practitioner in the BGMC liver transplant program. “Being able to provide this lifesaving service to the community we serve, including Medicare and Medicaid patients, is something we are very proud of.”

BGMC has been partnering with Jackson Memorial Hospital (JMH) on the county’s first liver transplant program since 2003. The arrangement allows residents within the five county South Florida region, particularly Broward and Palm Beach counties, to benefit from JMH’s organ procurement processes. One of the biggest program benefits is that Broward and Palm Beach residents can undergo liver transplants closer to home.

Broward General physicians and nurses are members of the transplant team, and BGMC provides equipment and surgical facilities. JMH, which has been doing liver transplants since 1987, provides the liver transplant surgeons, experts in liver transplants, clinical protocols and database, specialized lab services and transplant fellows.
