“Recipes for Life Cookbook” Raises Funds for Women in Need of Mammograms

Coral Springs - More than 250 people recently attended Coral Springs Medical Center’s Open House Social to introduce the Recipes for Life Cookbook. Revenues from sales are part of a fundraising initiative to raise funds for the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund, a fund that provides women in need the opportunity to receive free mammograms.

“The book is truly a labor of love,” said Lisa Boccard, who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1991 and then again with metastatic breast cancer in 2006. “With over 500 recipes submitted from the community, this cookbook is very personal because so many people took the time to share their favorite dishes for one great cause.  Those recipes are now compiled into one beautiful book for everyone to enjoy.”

The event showcased a recipe tasting, educational forums from physicians and experts, raffles, and a book signing from Lisa Boccard herself. To date, more than $13,000 has been raised from the cookbook alone—this allows for 130 women to get screened for breast cancer.

“While this is such a great accomplishment, the need to provide more women the opportunity is critical.  There are too many women who are uninsured and go without their annual mammogram and I know too well that early diagnosis can be life saving,” said Boccard.

The idea of the cookbook originated as a fundraising idea from a physician on the CSMC medical staff, Dr. Marlene Wolf. A planning committee was developed, and after months of effort the idea became a reality. “We simply reached out to the community for their recipes and the outpouring was tremendous,” said Boccard who also serves on the planning committee. The book was intentionally launched in October to commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness month, and to give people the opportunity to purchase the books for holiday gifts. The cost of the book is $20 with 100% of the proceeds benefiting the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund.

The Fund was founded in 2003 by Vincent and Terry Boccard in support of Vincent’s sister Lisa and her fight against breast cancer.  The Boccard’s joined forces with Coral Springs Medical Center to raise funds for women who may otherwise not be able to attain breast care including mammograms.
