What’s Going Around

Juan Bravo, M.D., at The Center for Wound Care and Hyperbaric Medicine at Imperial Point Medical Center, is treating diabetic foot ulcers.  These ulcers are best treated in a wound center where advanced wound care, and when appropriate, hyperbaric oxygen can be used.  (WPLG Ch. 10, March 16, 2010)


Beach Bash to Raise Funds for the Chris Evert Children’s Hospital Expansion

The Hilton Fort Lauderdale Marina will be transformed into a tropical paradise on March 20 for the Pediatrix Medical Group/Broward Health Foundation Beach Bash.  All proceeds will benefit the expansion and renovation of Broward Health Chris Evert Children’s Hospital.  (Sun-Sentinel, Society Broward, March 17, 2010)


Broward Housing Solutions Unveils New Riverside Park Complex

NBMC Names Most Valuable Physicians for the Quarter

North Broward Medical Center’s Most Valuable Physicians (MVP) for this quarter are Philip Decubellis, DPM, and Sherika Newman, DO.  Dr. Decubellis has been a podiatrist and wound care physician at NBMC since 2006.  Dr. Newman joined North Broward as a palliative care physician in 2009.  (Westside Gazette, March 18-24 & Google alert, March 23, 2010)

Family Resource Center of South Florida Receives Grant from Ronald McDonald Charities

The Family Resource Center of South Florida, a leading provider of child welfare services, has recently received a $10,000 grant from Ronald McDonald House (RMH) Charities.  South Florida is home to two RMHs.  One is located on the campus of Broward General Medical Center.  (Daily Business Review, March 18, 2010)


Southern Florida Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Board of Trustees

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer.  Elected members serve on the Board of Trustees of the Southern Florida Chapter. Local IT Staffing and Budgets Growing in 2010

The average IT budget in South Florida increased for 2010.  According to Doris Crain, CIO for Broward Health, the hospital system is using more temporary help this year from three contract workers to 10 to 15 contract workers. Broward Health’s IT budget rose about two percent partly by the need to update systems for electronic medical records.  (South Florida Business Journal, March 19, 2010)


Breaking Barriers

Pauline Grant, CEO for Broward Health North Broward Medical Center, was featured on a series called Breaking Barriers.  Grant has spent 32 years in the healthcare industry and was named CEO of NBMC after working for Broward Health for 12 years.  She focuses setting standards higher and advises to excel at whatever task you are given.  (WPLG Ch. 10, March 20, 2010)


A Small Comfort

A computerized information kiosk installed at Chris Evert Children’s Hospital helps parents develop a greater understanding of their baby’s progress while in the neonatal intensive care unit.  Representatives from the March of Dimes and WalMart celebrated the latest installation of the kiosk at CECH with a March 11 tour of the NICU and tutorial about how to use the computerized center.  (Miami Herald, March 21, 2010)


FY 2011 Appropriations Request

A new post partum unit to be located Broward Health Broward General Medical Center was listed in Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz (D-FL) appropriations request for FY 2011.

The $5,000,000 request will feature a 36 bed, 28,000 square foot facility.  (Media release, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Shultz, March 21, 2010)


Celebration of Smiles Charity Ride

The third annual “Celebration of Smiles” event coordinated by the Big Bikers Children’s Foundation was recently held to raise funds for Broward Health Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. The motorcycle ride began at Broward General Medical Center and ended at Coral Springs Medical Center.
