Monday, March 29, 2010 - For Teens with Cancer, “Unforgettable Prom” Sponsored by Seven South Florida Hospitals Will Be a Night to Remember

For Immediate Release

Ft. Lauderdale, FL --- Prom night is a special highlight for most teenagers - a reason to dress up and dance the night away.  It is also a special celebration that kids with cancer often have to miss.

But on April 30, 2010, these teens will have a chance to party at a prom of their own. South Florida’s first annual “Unforgettable Prom” is being hosted by the Friends of Scott Foundation, an organization committed to helping children with cancer and their families.  The Foundation was founded in memory of Scott Delgadillo, who lost his battle with acute lymphocytic leukemia at age 14.

Seven South Florida Hospitals are helping coordinate and promote this event.  They include Broward Health Chris Evert Children’s Hospital and Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Broward County, Baptist Health, Miami Children’s Hospital and University of Miami/Holtz Children’s Hospital in Miami-Dade County, as well as Palms West and St. Mary’s Hospital in Palm Beach County.  The prom will be held at the elegant Ritz-Carlton hotel on Fort Lauderdale beach.

Over 250 children, ages 12 to 19, will be treated like stars as they arrive in limousines, walk the red carpet, and are greeted by Ellie Rodriquez, commentator, from WSVN’s Deco Drive.

“The kids are so excited about the prom. While their days are usually spent focusing on their illness, the prom takes their mind off of being sick,” said Trish Lira, Director of Child Life Services at Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. “And because all the attendees are cancer patients, they don’t worry about looking or feeling different – everyone understands what they’re going through.”

The prom is held at no cost to the children or their families, thanks to the generosity of sponsors and donations.  Everything from tuxedos for the boys, dresses and hair and make-up for the girls, door-to-door limousine transportation, prom photos, food, music and much more are all being provided.  Among the many sponsors are businesses that include Southern Formals of Fort Lauderdale, Pepsi, Becca’s Closet, USA Transportation, Aveda Salons, and Blue Martini. Celebrities such as tennis great Chris Evert will make an appearance at this one-of-a-kind event as well as other local athletes.

"I have seen the impact that this type of event has made in other parts of the country, and I'm very excited to make it happen in South Florida,” said Brandon Opre, Friends of Scott board member and chair of the prom committee.  “This will truly be a special event, and the amount of support we have in putting this together has been spectacular."
