Monday, March 29, 2010 - Coral Springs Medical Center Marks its 100th Procedure Using the da Vinci ®Si™Robotic Surgical System

System Is Used for Minimally Invasive Adult Urology & Gynecology Surgical Procedures

Coral Springs, FL - Last summer Coral Springs Medical Center (CSMC) became first and only hospital in Broward County to acquire robotic surgery capabilities for patients needing a prostatectomy or a hysterectomy. Since then, surgical specialists at CSMC have performed its 100th procedure using the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System.

Previously, all surgeries were performed “open,” where an incision was made in the body large enough for the surgeon to plainly see – and insert his or her hands into – the surgical field. The large incisions that open surgery required caused pain, increased risk of infection, and extended recovery time.

With the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System, the same complex surgeries are performed but through tiny surgical openings with high-definition 3D vision. This allows surgeons’ hand movements to be scaled, filtered and translated into precise movements within the operative site. The benefits to the patients typically include less blood loss, less chance of infection, a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less scarring, and faster recovery.

Less than a year ago, Dr. Boniface Ndubisi, CSMC gynecologic oncologist performed the first surgery - a laparoscopic hysterectomy - using the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System. The 100th procedure-a hysterectomy-was performed by obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Fern Taisenchoy-Bent.
