Broward General Medical Center and Chris Evert Children’s Hospital Wound Care Nurses' Poster Winner at National and International Conference
Fort Lauderdale, FL - Broward Health Broward General Medical Center Certified Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses’ poster was the winner in the Case Study category at the 2010 Joint Conference of The Wound, Ostomy & Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) and The World Council of Enterostomal Therapists (WCET) in Phoenix, AZ.
The case study poster highlighted the use of Matristem, a product derived from Urinary Bladder Matrix (UBM) in an open complex wound in a premature neonate - the first procedure of its kind in the neonatal population. The poster demonstrated how the product, composed of elastin, collagen and other materials associated with wound closure, produced rapid healing of the wound, allowing for higher quality care of the patient.
Cindy Boily, Broward General and Chris Evert Children’s Hospital CNO said, “This award is another example of our nursing staff’s consistent dedication in administering best practice and evidence in providing superior nursing care to all our patients. We are so proud to have been recognized for this research and the optimum results it has provided.”
With impressive clinical leadership, Amparo Cano, MSN, RN, CWOCN and Patricia Corvino, MSN, RN, CWOCN were able to research the best evidence-based practices available. Combined with the efforts of Chris Evert Children’s Hospital neonatologists and staff of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), their research produced the exceptional results outlined in the study. The procedure has since been used on three other patients with excellent results.
