Ft. Lauderdale, FL -- The Medical Staff at Broward General Medical Center has awarded seven graduating high school students who are interested in a career in the medical field, a $1,000 dollar scholarship to help them pursue their career path.

This scholarship is given every year to high school students fascinated by the medical field. Since 2008, BGMC has awarded scholarships to various students in need. This year instead of the high schools choosing the recipients of the award, the awardees were chosen after a long review of candidates by physicians and volunteers from the hospital staff.

Each student was required to fill out an application and write a 1000 word essay explaining how the scholarship will help them achieve their goals in a career in medicine. Their essays described about how important this scholarship was to them and how much it would assist them. Their essays however, were not the only factors for being chosen. Each candidate was graded based on their GPA, extra curricular activities, essay and financial standing. Frank Lomagistro, M.D. chaired the committee which chose the students from each high school who were most deserving of this prestigious award from Stranahan, Dillard and Ft. Lauderdale High Schools.

On July 27th, 2010, the winners were recognized at BGMC at an awards ceremony and reception. Each winner was presented with a certificate and their award from Frank Lomagistro, MD, and Rajiv Chokski, MD, Chief of Staff. Immediately following, the plaque where the names of the recipients are prominently displayed was unveiled.
