Sunday, September 05, 2010 - Chris Evert Children’s Hospital Patient Louis Goff to Have a Special Space at Home

Ft. Lauderdale, FL - Chris Evert Children’s Hospital patient Louis Goff will now have another reason to smile when he’s at home. Thanks to charitable organization Special Spaces, five-year-old Louis will come home to a brand-new Army-themed bedroom customized just for him.

After being diagnosed with stage 4 Burkitt’s lymphoma in 2009, Louis was determined that he was going to battle his illness, choosing to think of himself as a soldier fighting the life-threatening condition.

“Louis’s courage has been inspirational for us at the hospital,” said Trish Lira, Child Life coordinator at Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. “He has been through so much, but never complains. It’s nice to know that he will now have a special retreat waiting for him at home.”

With the help and donations of local businesses, individual contributions and volunteers, Louis’s bedroom will be transformed in a short time frame and a special event revealing the renovations to Louis and his family will be held on September 12th.

“It was completely Louis’s choice to have an Army-inspired room,” said Candace Hillier, special projects coordinator at Urban Interiors, a Ft. Lauderdale-based firm that is managing the home improvements for the Goff household. “And the most rewarding moment of the project will be when he sees it for the very first time.”

Louis’s new room will feature a captain’s bed with built-in desk, and a painted six foot mural of an Army helicopter. The room will coordinate with the Army-themed playset in Louis’s backyard donated by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

In Louis’s case, additional home improvements will be rolled into the makeover project and extend beyond just his bedroom. In 2005, the home suffered major damage from Hurricane Wilma and, because of the overwhelming costs, not all repairs could be made.

New electric boxes will be installed, and the home will be painted inside and out. A patio will be built and a grill will be set up so that Louis can enjoy his favorite foods - grilled steak, potatoes and corn.

“We are going the extra mile on this project because we believe that the family as a whole needs to be well,” said Hillier. “The home requires extensive work, and we are all so thrilled to know that these renovations will help Louis and his family feel more safe and comfortable. Working on this is a joy for everyone involved.”

Special Spaces was founded based on the belief that children with life-threatening illnesses who spend an extensive amount of time in their bedrooms need a place of their own to recharge their bodies and spirits. In addition to Urban Interiors, other businesses involved in the renovations include Lexis Nexis Group, C& F Electric, Rita Marie's Custom Workroom, master muralist/faux painter Randall Keller, Brad Weimer Custom Woodwork, EJ Painting Company, Luis Marrero of Renewit.com, Lumber Liquidators, and others.
