Fort Lauderdale, FL- Broward General Medical Center’s (BGMC) Heart Center of Excellence recently received the three-year Pediatric and Fetal ECHO Accreditation from the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL). This accreditation is in recognition of BGMC’s commitment to high quality patient care and its provision of quality diagnostic testing. It is the only hospital in Broward to receive this accreditation and one of the first 230 pediatric echocardiography laboratories in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

In addition, cardiac sonographer Mary Davis has received her Adult, Pediatric and Fetal Certification. Davis is the only adult pediatric and fetal certified technologist in Broward County and is one of only four in the state of Florida. She is also one of only 100 in the U.S. to hold the certification.

“It was a personal achievement for me to receive all three ultrasound registries for Adult, Pediatric and Fetal,” said Davis. “Dr. Jocelyn Garcia De Viera, M.D., FAAP, FACC, played an integral role in the ICAEL accreditation for the Pediatric and Fetal Echo Labs and continues to be a mentor for myself and others.”

The ICAEL was established with the support of the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Society of Echocardiography (ASE), the Society of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (SDMS) and the Society of Pediatric Echocardiography (SOPE) to provide a peer review mechanism to encourage and recognize the provision of quality echocardiographic diagnostic evaluations by a process of voluntary accreditation. A non-profit organization, the ICAEL is dedicated to ensuring high quality patient care and to promoting health care.
