Friday, February 25, 2011 - Broward General Medical Center Named LIVESTRONG® Community Impact Project Award Recipient

Broward General Medical Center was recently announced as a LIVESTRONG® Community Impact Project award recipient. The project, created by LIVESTRONG will bring proven cancer support programs to 55 communities across the United States.

“We are thrilled and honored to be named as a Community Impact Project award recipient,” said Heather Miller, Interim Director of Cancer Services at Broward General Medical Center (BGMC). “This award will go a long way in helping people in our community who are affected by cancer. We want to give special thanks to everyone who voted for us. Together, we’re making a difference in the lives of cancer survivors and their families.”

Only 179 qualified hospitals, cancer centers and community organizations in the United States were selected to participate in an online voting campaign. Over a two-week period, more than 260,000 votes were cast and BGMC was among the finalists. Broward General’s Comprehensive Cancer Center will use the $4,000 award to integrate The Cancer Transitions Program to support, educate and empower people with cancer in the transitional period after treatment is over.

The program, which will begin in March 2011 at Broward General Medical Center, will incorporate support groups, education, nutritional advice and physical exercise, as well as address other medical management, psychosocial and quality of life issues. Practical tools and resources to formulate a personal action plan for survivorship beyond their participation in Cancer Transitions will also be provided.
