Fort Lauderdale, FL - The Medical Staff at Broward General Medical Center has awarded six graduating high school students who are interested in a medical career with $1,000 scholarships to help them pursue their education.

Every year these scholarships are given to high school students who plan on entering the medical field.  Since 2008, BGMC has awarded more than 25 scholarships to students who are chosen after careful review by a committee of physicians and volunteers from the hospital staff.

Each student applicant is required to complete an application and write a 1,000 word essay describing how this scholarship will help them achieve their goals in medicine. Along with the essays, committee members considered  GPA’s, extra curricular activities and financial need. Frank Lomagistro, M.D. chaired the committee which chose the students from each high school who were most deserving of this prestigious award.  “It has been very rewarding to work with these dedicated, passionate students who would like to enter the healthcare field” stated Dr. Lomagistro.  “All of the physicians at Broward General Medical Center have had many people in their lives help them along the way to achieve their goals. This scholarship allows us to thank those people and help a new generation reach their goals.”

On June 2, 2011, the six winners were recognized at BGMC at an awards ceremony and reception.  Each winner was presented with a certificate and their $1,000 scholarship by Frank  Lomagistro, MD, and Rajiv Chokshi, MD, Chief of Staff.  Immediately following, a plaque engraved with the names of the recipients which will be displayed at Broward General Medical Center was unveiled.
