Thursday, September 08, 2011 - Broward General Medical Center Receives Two Luminare Awards

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - The Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency recently awarded Broward Health Broward General Medical Center (BGMC) with two Luminare Awards.  Elaine Miller, RN, received the 2011 Nurse of the Year Award and BGMC’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) was honored with the 2011 Hospital of the Year Award.  BGMC will be recognized at the Life Alliance Luminare Awards Gala on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Fontainebleau Miami Beach Hotel for its continuous support and unwavering dedication to organ donation and its excellence in collaborating with Life Alliance to turn tragedies into miracles.

“Broward General Medical Center is honored to be recognized by the Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency.  Organ recovery is one of the most sobering procedures our physicians and nurses perform.  Yet, through the tragedy and sadness comes hope that lives will be saved and hope restored for hundreds of others.  We are proud that we can make such a remarkable impact in South Florida and beyond,” said Glidewell.

The Luminare Award is named in recognition of those who, in the performance of their routine duties, have provided leadership and inspiration to others through their tireless and selfless efforts to save lives through organ donation and transplantation.  According to Life Alliance, it takes many dedicated professionals, striving together with Life Alliance staff, to accomplish the miracle of transplantation. It begins with the nurses at the hospitals, and eventually includes the physicians, pastoral care and social workers, the hospital administration that supports the program and the cooperation of the coroner's office/medical examiner's office.

The Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency is a non-profit organization that provides transplantation opportunities for patients, educates health care professionals and the community about organ donation and provides support and comfort to bereaved donor families.  Established in 1978, it operates as a division of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s DeWitt Daughtry Family Department of Surgery, and serves Miami-Dade, Broward, Monroe, Palm Beach, Collier and St. Lucie counties and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas.
