Broward Health Unveils MAMMO-PALOOZA Madness
The Goal: 1,300 Mammograms in One Week!
Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - Have a mammogram. Attend a special event. Walk through a giant set of inflatable human breasts? It must be time for Broward Health’s annual MAMMO-PALOOZA!
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Broward Health will host the third annual MAMMO-PALOOZA from Oct. 10-15. Coordinated throughout Broward Health’s hospitals and health centers, mammograms will be offered, the AmeriBreasts exhibit will be on display and other events will take place to increase breast health awareness.
MAMMO-PALOOZA focuses on the importance of getting timely mammograms and has set a goal of at least 1,300 screenings for the week of Oct. 10. Mammograms will be offered at an affordable price and will be covered through health insurance. MAMMO-PALOOZA will include raffle prizes, food, mini-spa treatments, meeting local TV and radio personalities and much more. Those who have a mammogram will receive a special gift.
In 2011, the American Cancer Society estimates that 230,480 women and 2,140 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Early detection of breast cancer improves the chances that breast cancer can be diagnosed at an early stage and treated successfully.
“As a surgical oncologist, I cannot stress enough the importance of being screened for breast cancer. Mammograms are imperative to catching the disease early. To have an event like MAMMO-PALOOZA, which brings awareness to breast cancer and provides an opportunity for women to be tested, is very special for our community,” says Dr. Nicholas Tranakas, Broward General Medical Center’s medical director for cancer services.
Recognizing the impact breast cancer is having on thousands of people in South Florida, Broward Health hospitals have aggressively pursued not only the best courses of detection and treatment, but also programming that assists patients receive screenings for early detection.
“Early detection and awareness is the cornerstone of MAMMO-PALOOZA and the Broward Health mission,” says Frank Nask, President/CEO of Broward Health. “This screening program can prevent more serious illness and even save the lives of our community members.”
