Wednesday, November 23, 2011 - Healthcare for the Homeless Serves 448 Thanksgiving Dinners to Homeless Community

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - Health Care for the Homeless held its annual Homeless Thanksgiving Feast on Nov. 21 at the Little House, located on West Broward Boulevard. Approximately 448 hot Thanksgiving meals with all the trimmings were served to the community, which were 100 more meals than served the prior year.

In addition to tents with beautifully decorated tables and food prepared by Health Care for the Homeless staff, music was provided by Douglas Bramwell of Seventh Avenue Family Health Center.

The Homeless Thanksgiving Feast has grown significantly since its start a few years ago.  Originally serving only 75, the event has expanded as Health Care for the Homeless broadened its idea to become a community-wide effort.  Today, food is donated by Broward Health staff, churches and outside agencies.  The Salvation Army donates chairs and tables, and tents are donated by Pelican.  Monetary donations from Broward Health employees and the Broward Health Foundation take care of the rest of the event.

“No words can express our deepest appreciation for your kindness, time and effort that was put into making this event a huge success,” said Jasmin Shirley, vice president of Community Health Services. “Once again, thank you all for your generous donations, support and time.”

This year’s Thanksgiving Feast was also bittersweet as it was the last time the event will be held in its current location due to construction of a new Little House commencing shortly.  The staff remains hopeful that the new building, which breaks ground in early January 2012, will be ready for next year’s feast.
