Broward Health now offers Pulmonary Rehabilitation

If you suffer from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases (COPD) such as asthma or emphysema, or have been diagnosed with other types of breathing disorders, every day can be challenging.

At the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center, located in the Broward Health Wellness Center, our goal is to provide a comprehensive multidisciplinary program to help you manage and decrease your symptoms, reduce hospitalizations and improve your quality of life.  Whether you have been recently diagnosed or have lived with a disorder for years, our caring approach will help return you to the activities you enjoy.

What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

Pulmonary rehabilitation is structured for ill patients with chronic respiratory problems whose pulmonary function has decreased, even after other medical treatment. It is also for patients who remain symptomatic, even if their pulmonary function has not decreased after other medical treatment.

The major benefits of Pulmonary Rehabilitation include:

  • improvement in quality of life
  • reduction in respiratory symptoms
  • increase in exercise tolerance and physical activity
  • improvement in psychological status with less anxiety

These benefits are accomplished through exercise, education and behavior modification. Blood pressure, heart rate and signs and symptoms are all monitored before and during each session by our team of specialists.

The Pulmonary Rehab Program

An individual program is designed by our team of pulmonary specialists.


  • Medically supervised
  • Meets 2-3 times per week
  • Utilizes a variety of exercise equipment
  • Education on a variety of pulmonary-related subjects:
    • Nutrition
    • Medications
    • Stress Management
    • Pertinent pulmonary issues

A Team Approach

Our team of specialists will create an individualized program based on exercise, counseling and education that will help you minimize exacerbations, reduce the isolation, anxiety and depression associated with breathing disorders and optimize your activity level. Our medical director, respiratory therapists, dietitians, athletic trainers, and behavioral health specialists are dedicated to providing the therapy and support you need to get the greatest benefit out of life.

During this phase, participants enjoy a personalized exercise program tailored to achieve their specific fitness goals. Upon completion of the program, patients are ready and able to continue their home exercise program or join the maintenance program at the Wellness Center.

Benefits of a hospital-based program

Our hospital setting provides a highly specialized program in a safe environment. The pulmonary rehabilitation program is conducted by a team of highly trained specialists and includes:

  • Pulmonologist
  • Respiratory Therapist
  • Registered Nurse
  • Registered Dietitian
  • Psychologists
  • Exercise Physiologists

Exercise sessions take place at the Wellness Center where patients have access to a wide range of the latest exercise equipment and a diverse class schedule, including a variety of aerobics, strength training, yoga, tai chi, and Pilates.

Getting started

Most insurance companies reimburse for pulmonary rehabilitation. A prescription and insurance verification is required prior to starting the program.
