What Do You Know About Nutrition and Cancer?

A diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains is important for good health. What effect does diet have on your risk for cancer? Find out by taking this quiz, based in part on information from the American Cancer Society (ACS).

1. Eating five or more servings of fruits and vegetables each day may reduce your risk for certain types of cancer.
2. Eating high-fat animal foods such as red meat won't increase your cancer risk.
3. Studies suggest that people who consume lots of antioxidants (vitamin C, vitamin A, and carotenoids) from food sources have a lower cancer risk.
4. Limiting your intake of preserved meats may reduce your cancer risk.
5. Eating plenty of foods made from grains, such as bread and cereal, is good for your heart, but may not have an effect on your risk for cancer.
6. Eating lots of cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage) may reduce your cancer risk.
7. Using artificial sweeteners can increase your cancer risk.
8. Drinking red wine or other alcoholic beverages can reduce your cancer risk.

Sleep Disorders may range from a variety of problems such as:

  • Breathing problems: Sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing becomes shallow or stops while you sleep. It is usually associated with loud snoring and daytime sleepiness. If left untreated, sleep apnea may cause heart disease, obesity, stroke, and increased mortality.
  • Neurological problems: Narcolepsy, a condition that causes sudden uncontrollable sleepiness, vivid dreaming, "sleep attacks," a loss of muscle control and sometime hallucinations.
  • Insomnia: The inability to initiate and or maintain sleep. Often, this may be due to emotional or situational circumstances. If it lasts more than a few weeks, you may have a more serious problem.

These are some of the most common problems associated with 84 of the known sleeping disorders.
Symptoms of a sleep disorder may include:

  • daytime sleepiness
  • drowsiness while driving
  • difficulty concentrating
  • morning headache
  • snoring
  • hypertension
  • Diabetes

Scheduling an Appointment

If you are concerned about the quantity and quality of your sleep or your bed partner has made comments to you about your snoring or other related sleep problems, consult with your primary care physician or specialist. If appropriate, your physician will refer you to the Sleep Disorder Center.
