Baseline Concussion Testing

Concussions are traumatic head injuries that occur from both mild and severe blows to the head. They are not only associated with professional athletes but also with school and recreational youth sports. While a standard sports physical is required by nearly all school and youth sports leagues, this will not provide doctors with important information about a child’s cognitive abilities should a concussion occur. A baseline concussion test will provide physicians with valuable information to use if a child suffers a concussion.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that every child playing a sport get a pre-season test of "normal" brain function (known as the ImPACT test). This pre-concussion test helps to establish a baseline of the child's normal cognitive brain function which can later be used to compare to a post-concussion test, should an injury occur during a sport. This neurocognitive test is recognized nationwide and adopted by the NFL, NHL and Broward County schools.

A complete history and physical along with the baseline concussion test is the best way to protect a young athlete's safety. Broward Health Urgent Care offers students the following exams:

More about ImPACT testing

Why is it important for athletes to get a baseline ImPACT test?
The ImPACT test is one of the many tools physicians use to determine the severity of a concussion. Comparing the pre- and post-concussion test scores can help determine treatment options and when and if an athlete can return to play. Some head injuries may appear to be mild but if left untreated, can have serious, long-term and cumulative effects.

What does the baseline pre-concussion ImPACT test measure?
It measures attention, verbal & visual memory, processing speeds and reaction times. It serves as a baseline to provide valuable clinical information when determining if your child has suffered a concussion as well as a determining factor of when the athlete has reached full recovery.

How does an ImPACT test work?
Prior to the sport season, an athlete will take the computer-based test which is administered by a trained health professional. It takes about 25 minutes and gathers information to measure cognitive function in different categories. In the event of a head injury, the results of the pre-ImPACT concussion test are compared with follow-up tests.

Who should get a pre-concussion ImPACT test?
The CDC recommends this as a pre-season test every year for children ages 10 to 12 and every two years for ages 13 and older. It is recommended for athletes participating in contact sports such as football, lacrosse, hockey, soccer, basketball, cheerleading and gymnastics.

What occurs at the time of a suspected head injury?
Optimally, if an injury is suspected, coaches or athletic trainers perform a sideline test to determine what immediate action is needed. Emergency services may be required for immediate treatment and/or diagnoses. Additionally, the ImPACT test should be repeated at this time.

Experts in concussion management will use the baseline and post-injury tests along with other neuropsychological assessments to determine the best treatment plan for the injured athlete.

Although recovery time varies and children often need more time than adults to recover from concussions, research suggests that if properly diagnosed and treated, most individuals will make a complete recovery.
