Report of the Commission on Review of Taxpayer Funded Hospital Districts (PDF).

December 23, 2011

While the possibility of transitioning to a community not-for-profit hospital remains open, we anticipate a report from the Governor’s Commission on Review of Taxpayer Funded Hospital Districts. The commission was created to assess and make recommendations on the role of Florida’s 34 hospital districts, whether it is in the public’s best interest to have government entities operating hospitals, and on the most effective model for enhancing health-care access for the poor. The commission is expected to issue their recommendations by the end of the year.

February 8, 2011: A message from Broward Health

As we enter a new year, Broward Health’s consideration of transforming to a community not-for-profit hospital remains a viable option. Since this plan was announced last year, we’ve sought feedback from the community and from industry leaders.

In September, October and November, we held public forums at various locations in our service area. The meetings provided an opportunity for Broward residents to ask questions, express concerns and offer their input. The meetings were productive and established a valuable dialog with our stakeholders.

In January, we had additional workshops with our board that outlined details regarding Employee Pension and Benefits and Sovereign Immunity. Additionally, Health Management Associates, a national firm specializing in health care finance, policy and administration, presented case studies on five hospital systems that successfully transformed from public to community systems. Their insight identified many of the benefits and a few of the drawbacks associated with such transitions. Presentation materials from these meetings are available on this website. We will continue to post additional information and resources as we receive it to make sure that we keep the community informed.

As we move forward with this process, we welcome ideas, questions and suggestions from the community. Please click here to email us your question.

November 18, 2010

On Wednesday, November 17th, 2010 the North Broward Hospital District Board (NBHD) voted unanimously to explore options for the NBHD to respond to the federal healthcare legislation as well as the national, state and local changing healthcare environment. The initial focus will allow the President/CEO to continue evaluating and research the feasibility of transitioning the North Broward Hospital District to a community not for profit as outlined in Florida Statute 155.40. This resolution replaces the resolution that was previously approved on September 10, 2010.
