Broward Health Coral Springs Medical Center Marks its 500th Procedure Using the da Vinci® Si™ Robotic Surgical System
System is Used for Minimally Invasive Adult Urology & Gynecology Surgical Procedures
Coral Springs, FL - In 2009, Broward Health Coral Springs Medical Center (BHCSMC) became the first hospital in Broward County to acquire the da Vinci® Si™ Robotic Surgical System with robotic surgery capabilities for patients needing a prostatectomy or a hysterectomy. Since then, the BHCSMC robotic surgical program has grown and currently has 20 da Vinci® trained surgeons. This month marks the 500th procedure using the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System.
Previously, all surgeries were performed “open,” where an incision was made in the body large enough for the surgeon to plainly see - and insert his or her hands into - the surgical field. The large incisions that open surgery required caused pain, increased risk of infection and extended recovery time for patients.
With the da Vinci® Si™ Surgical System, the same complex surgeries are performed but through tiny surgical openings with high-definition 3D vision. This allows surgeons’ hand movements to be scaled, filtered and translated into precise movements within the operative site. These technological advancements provide BHCSMC surgeons with unparalleled precision, dexterity and control that enable a minimally-invasive approach for many complex surgical procedures. Benefits to patients typically include less blood loss, less chance of infection, a shorter hospital stay, less pain, less scarring and faster recovery.
The 500th procedure - a prostectomy - was performed at BHCSMC by urologist Dr. Michael Zahalsky. Patients who have received a da Vinci® prostatectomy have significantly lower rates of serious complications (3.7 percent for robotic vs. 12.9 percent for open) and are able to return to work significantly earlier than open prostatectomy patients (11 days for robotic vs. 49 days for open).
