Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – Seven-year-old Marquaivous Randell had been diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a type of cancer, when he came to the pediatric oncology team at Chris Evert Children’s Hospital (CECH) to have a mass removed from his knee.

Randell’s family eagerly awaited his return home following his surgery and treatment. But the Randell family had recently moved into a new apartment, and with their time and finances dedicated to Randell’s treatment, his room remained empty. Local charity Drops of Hope stepped in to create a special bedroom to make his life as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

“Marquaivous is a wonderful boy with a great attitude and fighting spirit,” said Heather Miller, director of cancer services at CECH and Broward Health Medical Center. “Despite all the challenges he’s faced, he remains positive. He is most deserving of this room makeover.”

With help and donations from local businesses, individual contributions and volunteers, Drops of Hope gave the bedroom a complete makeover. The room, which was completed on May 27, was furnished and decorated according to Randell’s request for a combination of superhero and sports themes. The once-empty room now has a new bed with Spider-Man sheets, a TV and Wii gaming system, artwork, a fish tank, books, pillows, a desk, an air purifier and more.

“Drops of Hope saw that there was an opportunity to make a difference in Marquaivous’s life by creating this special environment just for him,” said Michael Fischer, executive director of Drops of Hope. “We hope that the new room continues to lift his spirits.”

“It makes him feel really happy, so it makes me happy,” said Shawnquell Randell, Randell’s mother.

As a part of its commitment to promote quality children’s health care, CECH partners with external organizations like Drops of Hope that are advocates for children and families in the community.
