Monday, December 23, 2013 - Broward Health Campuses Go Smoke Free on January 1, 2014

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. – As of January 1, 2014, all Broward Health campuses, including four hospitals, urgent care centers, community health centers and physician offices, will be completely smoke free.

Smoking will be prohibited in all Broward Health buildings, parking lots, garages and on all grounds. The smoke-free policy applies to all patients, visitors, vendors, medical staff and employees.

“Broward Health’s mission is to protect the health of those in our community, while promoting a culture of healthy living for our patients and employees,” said Frank Nask, CEO of Broward Health.

Over the past year, Broward Health has increased efforts to promote a smoke-free environment by posting signage, providing free resources and smoking cessation classes to employees. Beginning in November, which is lung cancer awareness month, Broward Health started offering a low-dose CT lung scan for $99 to long-time smokers who meet certain criteria.  Those concerned about their risk for lung cancer may visit BrowardHealth.org/lungcancer to complete a brief risk assessment.

Starting on January 1, people who wish to smoke will be asked to leave the Broward Health campuses to do so.  “We ask that if anyone leaves our campuses to smoke, please be respectful of our neighbor’s homes, businesses and property,” said Nask.

This policy includes all smoking products including vapor/electronic cigarettes. More information about the smoke-free policy may be found at BrowardHealth.org/smokefree.
