Tuesday, March 24, 2009 - Frank P. Catinella, MD, Appointed Medical Director of CVICU at Heart Center of Excellence

Ft. Lauderdale, FL – Broward Health is proud to announce that Frank P. Catinella, M.D., a skilled cardiothoracic surgeon, has been appointed Medical Director of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU) at Broward Health’s Heart Center of Excellence.

The 16-bed unit is part of the world-class, 115,000-square foot Heart Center of Excellence, a national leader in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of heart disease.  Staffed by highly respected and skilled cardiologists, cardiac surgeons and anesthesiologists, The Heart Center of Excellence is designed to give patients and their families easy access to a wide range of preventive, diagnostic, interventional, and surgical cardiovascular services. In addition to the CVICU, the facility includes three cardiovascular surgical suites, two cardiac catheterization laboratories, a comprehensive electrophysiology lab, an eight-bed coronary care unit, a 30-bed progressive cardiac care unit, a 24-hour chest pain center and an integrated preventive medicine, wellness and cardiac rehabilitation center.

Dr. Catinella has been practicing cardiothoracic surgery in Florida since 1988. He earned a bachelor’s degree, cum laude, from the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, IN, and a doctorate degree in medicine from New York University. Dr. Catinella completed residency training in cardiothoracic surgery at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago. An author of numerous published journal articles and book chapters on cardiac surgery, Dr. Catinella has served as a clinical and research fellow at the New York University and Maimonides Medical Center in New York City.

Dr. Catinella is board certified by the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery and has received a certificate of special recognition in vascular surgery. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and a member of the Association of Academic Surgeons. Dr. Catinella holds a certificate of specialized training in transmyocardial laser surgery and is actively involved in clinical research projects in this area.
