Tuesday, September 28, 2010 - North Broward Medical Center Now Offering Free Dizziness and Balance Screenings

Deerfield Beach, FL - The Dizziness and Balance Rehabilitation Center at Broward Health North Broward Medical Center is now offering free monthly screenings. Dizziness and Balance screenings are available by appointment only on the second Tuesday of every month.

The human balance system is very complex. The ability to maintain balance depends on information from three sources: vision, muscles and joints, and the vestibular system located in the inner ear. A problem with any one of these sources will affect balance.  Dizziness itself is not a disease; it's a symptom. Some causes of dizziness and/or balance problems include inner ear disorders (vertigo), stroke, head injury or neurological disorders.

“Poor balance and instability are often accepted as an inevitable part of getting older,” says Cheryl Tombo, Director of the Neurological Institute at North Broward Medical Center. “But loss of balance is not a component of aging. Many things can compromise someone’s balance control and it’s important to diagnose and treat the underlying cause.”

The information gathered during the screening will be used to determine how well the balance system is functioning. Depending on the results of the screening, a full evaluation may be recommended and at that time a physician referral will be required. Please call 954-786-6700 to schedule a free screening. The screenings take about 20 minutes and are conducted in the Dizziness and Balance Rehabilitation Center at North Broward Medical Center.  North Broward Medical Center is located at 201 E. Sample Road in Deerfield Beach, FL.
