Tuesday, December 28, 2010 - Breast Cancer Awareness Boat Wins Best Overall Non-Profit at Winterfest Boat Parade

Coral Springs - Holiday cheer is in the pink this year for Coral Springs Medical Center’s (CSMC) Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund’s entry at the Winterfest Boat Parade. The themed entry aboard the Two of Us yacht was named Best Overall Non-Profit at the Winterfest Boat Parade. In hopes of building awareness and assisting more women in need of mammograms and breast care, the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund embarked for the first time in the holiday event. The 52 ft. yacht was transformed into a pink spectacle complete with a giant bow, a pink tree, and board members all decked out in pink.

Nearly 100 boats paraded down the Fort Lauderdale inter-coastal waterway in bright lights of green, red or blue, but this year PINK was the new color on the horizon! “What could have easily been an expensive endeavor was made possible by the generosity of many - all touched in some way by breast cancer or cancer,” said Lisa Boccard.

Those who contributed included: Arthur Shachner, MD, who generously donated the use of his 52 ft. Hatteras yacht, the Two of Us and captained the yacht. Dr. Shachner’s donation was in memory of his late wife of 48 years who battled breast cancer. Their son, Dr. Mark Shachner is the Medical Director of the Women’s Diagnostic and Women’s Center at CSMC and plays an integral role in fund raising for the Lisa Boccard Fund.

The boat’s color theme of pink, pink and more pink was lit thanks to Michelle Greenfield of MG Productions who provided a professional lighting decorator at cost which will be subsidized by CSMC.  Michelle lost her mother to lung cancer and the decorator, Pam Rose of Illuminart, recently lost her mother to breast cancer.

No entry would be complete without music! Rick and Toni Couvell of I DJ Parties provided DJ services pro bono in support of the Fund’s mission.

Refreshments for the evening were provided the old fashioned way - a potluck fest homemade by Lisa Boccard herself and members of the Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fundraising Committee.

The Lisa Boccard Breast Cancer Fund was created in 1993 by Lisa’s brother Vince and his wife Terry in honor of Lisa and her battle with breast cancer.  Lisa, while still battling metastatic breast cancer, is focusing her drive and energy on raising funds to provide free mammograms, in partnership with Coral Springs Medical Center, to women in financial need. For more information on the Fund visit www.browardhealth.org/LissaBoccardFund. In addition, the boat is now in the running for the People’s Choice Award.
