Broward Health Imperial Point Medical Center Receives NICHE Designation
Organization Moves to the Forefront of Elder Care
Broward Health Imperial Point Medical Center announced that it has received designation as a Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) site. NICHE is the only national designation indicating a hospital’s commitment to elder care excellence.
"For instance, our nurses know how important a thorough assessment is that includes the input of family, or significant others, who are familiar with usual activity levels and cognitive skills of our older adults immediately prior to hospitalization,” said Patrice Del Grosso, MSN, RN, Clinical Education Department at Imperial Point Medical Center (IPMC). "The aging process puts older adults at higher risk for many disease entities, which if recognized early, can easily be corrected. Unfortunately, many healthcare workers see a 'confused' older adult and dismiss it as 'normal' behavior, when in reality they may be experiencing any number of things such as a reaction to polypharmacy or a urinary tract infection. Our nurses, are taking their role as patient advocate to the next level, especially when it comes to our older adult patients."
The NICHE designation signals IPMC's resolve to provide patient-centered care for older adults. Through its participation in the NICHE program - the largest geriatric nursing program available - Imperial Point is able to offer evidence-based, interdisciplinary approaches that promote positive experiences for the older adults in its care. This leads to greater satisfaction rates for patients and their families.
"NICHE certification marks the beginning of a journey to incorporate evidence-based practice into our daily care. Our nurses are dedicated to providing safe and effective care to our community elders and their families," said Mark Sprada, chief nursing officer, IPMC.
