Brandon & Katie Fields Youth Fitness Fund, founded by NFL pro punter Brandon Fields and his wife Katie, held the very first Fields Fit Fest in South Florida on Saturday, April 13, at Fort Lauderdale’s Holiday Park. The one-day fitness and nutrition camp was the first of many Fields Fit Fests to be held in 2013 to teach kids aged 5 to 11 fun and easy ways to be active every day.
Fields Fit Fest started out in Katie and Brandon’s hometown in Ohio and was designed in response to rising rates of obesity. The couple wanted to find easy and less expensive ways for kids to be active.
“Nowadays, a lot of sports are pay to play, and many families can’t afford to put their kids on teams,” said Katie Fields. “We started the Fit Fests to teach kids how to be physically active if they don’t enjoy or participate in sports. We teach them that exercise is fun.”

Activities at the Fit Fest included dance, yoga, aerobic games and an obstacle course made up of items commonly found around the home. While kids played games like Duck Duck Goose with Brandon Fields and his teammates Dan Carpenter (kicker), John Denney (long snapper) and former pro linebacker Twan Russell, their parents watched from the sidelines and spoke with health, fitness and nutrition experts from partnering organizations Broward Health and Chris Evert Children’s Hospital.
As clouds loomed overhead, participants completed 20 minutes of activity before being forced to take shelter from a torrential thunderstorm. Once out of the rain, kids took photos with the pros and brought them t-shirts, goody bags and footballs to sign.
“The first Fields Fit Fest here was very South Florida, but despite the rain, the kids had fun and heard our message loud and clear. Our hope is that they continue to see exercise as fun all the way into adulthood,” said Brandon Fields.
Brandon & Katie Fields Youth Fitness Fund partnered with community organizations Broward Health (title sponsor) and Chris Evert Children’s Hospital (presenting sponsor), as well as NFL Play 60 and fellow NFL pro football player kicker Dan Carpenter and his wife Kaela of Cookinandkickin.com. In-kind donors included All in Stitches, Bashful Daisy Florist, Downtown Photo, Cigna, Yoga Bees and DJ Mike Marino.
Additional event dates will be announced at the end of April at BrandonandKatieFields.com.
