North Broward Medical Center Takes Showcase and Storyboard Awards at Florida Sterling Conference
Deerfield Beach, FL – Broward Health North Broward Medical Center’s
process improvement team, A Powerful Culture of Safety, was awarded the
2008 Team Showcase Award at the 16th Annual Sterling Conference in
Orlando. Broward Health North Broward also won first place in the
storyboard competition.

Competing
against process improvement teams from various industries in Florida’s
five other regions, it is the first time in the history of the
conference that teams from one organization won first place in both
events. The awards were presented May 30, 2008.
“We strive to provide the community with safe, quality health care.
This goal was chosen to further enhance our culture of safety,” said
Pauline Grant, CEO of Broward Health North Broward Medical Center.
“This achievement is a collaboration of each employee who practices
quality and safety on a daily basis.”
The presentation showcased the creation and promotion of safety
measures that not only became second nature to staff, but also included
patients, families and visitors in the process. Patient data and
patient satisfaction surveys validated the success of the project.
Performance measures for positive patient identification, reduction of
infections, and medication management met or exceeded all goals.
“This award is the first step in moving toward the Sterling Challenge
for Organizational Excellence and the Governor’s Sterling Award. The
showcase provides a forum for organizations to demonstrate how quality
is improved through employee participation. The Sterling Award is what
we aim to achieve through our continued efforts,” said Lisa Rawlins,
director of quality and performance improvement for Broward Health.
Broward Health North Broward’s first place win in the storyboard
competition was for a presentation entitled Team Bees Put the Honey
Back in Satisfaction. The storyboard team focused on the turn around
time for processing lab results and the wait time for cancer services,
dramatically improving customer satisfaction and raising productivity
for both departments.
Broward Health North Broward’s team showcase will now represent Florida
in Minneapolis, Minnesota to compete at the International Quality
Conference in May 2009.
