Broward Health Foundation Receives $100,000 Donation from Hyundai Hope on Wheels to Benefit Chris Evert Children’s Hospital
September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and to commemorate it, Hyundai Hope on Wheels is working to raise awareness of childhood cancer with donations given as “Hope Grants” to hospitals and nonprofit organizations across the country. Broward Health Foundation, the fundraising arm of Broward Health, received a grant in the amount of $100,000 that will benefit Chris Evert Children’s Hospital.
The grant will impact young cancer patients in the hospital’s Outpatient Hematology-Oncology unit and will be used to hire one full-time Child Life Specialist (CLS) and one part-time Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). These individuals will provide psychosocial support and child-focused education to children with cancer, as well as support and education to the child’s family members.
Specifically, the CLS will provide support through the Journey of Hope Bead Program. This program promotes courage and hope in the child’s treatment journey by providing a therapeutic outlet for coping with each child’s challenging milestones, such as laying still for an MRI or completing chemotherapy treatment. In addition, play and toys will be utilized to help reduce procedure time and the need for pain medications, and calm and comfort the child during clinical visits and medical procedures.
The CNS will provide clinical-based education to patients newly diagnosed with any type of cancer and their families, and will provide ongoing, individualized educational plans from diagnosis until completion of the child’s course of treatment.
“This grant will have a tremendous impact on all of us here at Chris Evert Children’s Hospital,” said Jamey Thaw, CEO of Broward General Medical Center and Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. “It will greatly improve the lives of our patients and their families during their hospital visits and beyond.”
On Thursday, September 9th at 2PM, local Hyundai dealers and representatives from Hyundai Motor America will present the grant at a special event at Chris Evert Children’s Hospital at Broward General Medical Center. Patients and their families will join pediatricians, nurses, administrators and staff from the children’s hospital to receive the generous donation.
