Family Celebrates a Milestone by Donating Toys to Chris Evert Children’s Hospital
Ft. Lauderdale, FL - When Janine Zamora was brought to Broward General Medical Center in 2009 to give birth to her son, she didn’t realize that more than a week would go by before she would be able to bring her son home.
Her son, Anderson, born via C-section, was admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Broward Health Chris Evert Children’s Hospital right after his birth, suffering from transient tachypnea, a condition which occurs when leftover fluid in the lungs causes the baby to breathe rapidly and makes it harder for the baby to keep the small air sacs of the lungs open.
While it was a tense time for Zamora and her family, the care that both she and Anderson received at Chris Evert left a lasting impression. “The hospital was wonderful,” said Zamora. “Every physician, nurse, and staff member made our stay as calm and comforting as possible,”
In appreciation, for Anderson’s first birthday Zamora asked friends and family to buy gifts for the hospital instead of buying gifts for her own baby.
Late one evening, the family brought two swings, two mobiles, and four bouncy seats to the hospital, accompanied by a card.
“I have been blessed with so much support, so much love, and so many gifts, that I could not imagine not giving some of that back,” said Zamora. “I truly believe that everything in life happens for a reason, and our stay in the NICU opened my eyes to the fact that there are so many amazing people that give so much of themselves to help others.”
“This thoughtful gesture by Ms. Zamora was so moving,” said Maria Osuch, RN, Nurse Manager of the NICU nurse at the hospital. “We know that having a little one in the hospital isn’t easy, and we do our best to provide the extra care and support that the patient - and the parents - need.”
