Fort
Lauderdale, FL – Twelve students from various high schools in the
county recently visited Imperial Point Medical Center in hopes of
discovering what working in the healthcare industry would be like. This
event called “Groundhog Shadowing Day,” pairs students with healthcare
workers who allow them to follow or “shadow” them for half a day.
The students were given an orientation on Imperial Point Medical Center
and the North Broward Hospital District services and philosophy as well
as the importance of the Health Insurance Portability and
Accountability Act (HIPAA) which emphasizes patient confidentiality.
Students were then paired with a healthcare worker from radiology,
laboratory, rehabilitation, pharmacy, and nurses in patient care areas.
They rotated among these departments and were able to experience as
little or as much as they wanted from each of them.
Mark Sprada, chief nursing officer of Imperial Point Medical Center
states, “Each year we welcome students who want to participate in
Groundhog Shadowing Day. Shadowing is a way for students to “try out” a
potential career choice, to really experience it firsthand.”
Imperial Point Medical Center is a facility of the North Broward
Hospital District. The North Broward Hospital District, providing
service for more than 50 years, is a community health system offering a
full spectrum of healthcare services. The District encompasses more
than 30 healthcare facilities, including Broward General Medical
Center, North Broward Medical Center, Imperial Point Medical Center,
Coral Springs Medical Center and Chris Evert Children’s Hospital. The
District is a medical safety net for Broward County residents.
