Daniel R. Kanell is a medical director of sports medicine and an orthopedic surgeon on staff at Broward Health Medical Center and Broward Health Imperial Point. He also serves as team physician for South Florida's major league teams, including the Florida Marlins baseball team. He previously served as spring training physician for the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Baltimore Orioles.
Dr. Kanell received his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh and his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He did his residency in orthopedic surgery at New York University - Bellevue Medical Center.
Dr. Kanell is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons. He is a fellow in the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, NFL Team Physicians Society, Major League Baseball Physicians Association and a participant in the Broward County Medical Association's "We Care" program. He was selected as Doctor of the Year by the Caducean Society of Broward County. He volunteers as a medical missionary in Honduras, Ecuador and El Salvador. He serves on the Medical Advisory Council for major league baseball.
More than 25 years ago, Dr. Kanell founded the Sports Medicine Program for the Broward County School Board. He has been a consultant for Olympic athletes as well as high school athletic teams. He has also been an instructor at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, clinical associate professor of orthopedic surgery at University of Florida Shands Teaching Hospital and co-director of sports medicine at Broward Health.
Dr. Kanell resides in Fort Lauderdale with his wife and four children and grandchildren and enjoys cycling, swimming and travel.
