Expanded Access to Emergency Care Services is Coming to Sunrise

Through an unprecedented partnership, Broward Health and Joe DiMaggio Children's Hospital are coming together to provide emergency services to Sunrise, Florida. To better serve the community, we are bringing an adult and pediatric freestanding emergency room to the northwest vicinity of Oakland Park Boulevard and North Pine Island Road, Winter 2025.

With nationally recognized pediatric expertise, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital provides specialized care for children of all ages. Our specialized pediatric services provide clinical care recognized throughout the country for advanced treatments.

When Do You Expect the Facility to Open?

To better serve the community, in late 2024 Broward Health and Memorial Healthcare System will open a new medical facility in the northwest quadrant of West Oakland Park Blvd. and North Pine Island Road.

What Are the Benefits of a Free-Standing Emergency Room Over an Urgent Care Center?

A free-standing emergency room gives patients convenient and quick access to expert ER care for those experiencing sudden illnesses or extreme medical issues such as uncontrolled bleeding, signs of stroke or heart attack, difficulty breathing, or loss of consciousness. In addition to these life-threatening conditions, or for issues that need the most immediate medical attention such as broken bones or severe pain, coming straight to an emergency room is your best choice. Using a free-standing ER means you or your loved one can come right to pediatric or adult emergency services – through separate entrances.

An urgent care center should be used for less extreme medical issues such as sprains or strains, minor infections, rashes, nose bleeds, minor cuts, recent fevers, or minor broken bones. Because ER care is triaged, meaning the most extreme medical conditions are treated first, your wait time and treatment for minor injuries or illnesses may be faster at an urgent care center.

Why Go to a Pediatric Emergency Department for a Child?

A pediatric emergency department is designed specifically for a child’s healthcare with a specific kid-friendly environment. Children require different equipment, testing protocols, and medication dosages than adults require and a pediatric emergency department is equipped with all of these considerations in mind with physicians and staffed trained in treating pediatric patients.

What Happens if a Patient Needs Care Beyond What the Freestanding Emergency Department Offers?

Similar to when a patient arrives at one of our community hospitals but requires a higher level of care, this new freestanding Emergency Department would be capable of seamlessly transferring a patient to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale. This provides a continuum of high-quality care close to home.

What Does the Initital Facility Entail?

The initial phase will include a Freestanding Adult and Pediatric Emergency Department (FSED)

Will You Accept Most Medical Insurances?

The new medical facility will accept the same medical insurances accepted at Broward Health and Memorial Healthcare System.
