Cynthia Memmoli

“Don’t Waste Time in Pain”

Cynthia Memmoli, 81, put off having a second hip replacement surgery because her first hip replacement had caused some complications. When the pain became too unbearable she knew it was time to get her other hip fixed.

Two years ago Memmoli relocated to South Florida from Ocala and, after doing research and getting recommendations from friends, she discovered Steven Naide, M.D., who performs anterior hip replacement surgeries at Broward Health North.

"I chose to come to Dr. Naide and Broward Health North because they offer minimally-invasive hip replacement surgery through the anterior approach that gets you up and moving the same day of surgery," said Memmoli. "With my first hip replacement, I had some blood clots caused by inactivity, and I needed to find a place that could make sure I didn't develop them again."

The anterior approach allows the surgeon to reach the hip joint from the front as opposed to the lateral (side) or posterior (back) of the hip. The hip is replaced without detachment of major muscles or bones during surgery, leading to less pain and a faster recovery.

"Due to her prior history of blood clots, we took extra precautions when treating Cynthia" said Dr. Naide. "With the anterior approach and early mobilization, this can lessen the risks."

Just two weeks after surgery, Memmoli was back home resuming her daily activities. She is getting in and out of bed without any distress and, most importantly, taking pain-free walks outside to enjoy the beautiful South Florida weather.

"I put off having surgery for too long because I was scared," said Memmoli. "Don't waste time being in pain. Get it done and get back to enjoying your life."
