If you feel a painful, burning sensation in your chest 30 minutes to 2 hours after you eat, you may have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
According to the American College of Gastroenterology, an estimated 15 million Americans experience heartburn symptoms every day. Over-the-counter medications can ease symptoms for some people, but these often aren’t a lifetime solution and can mask more severe underlying conditions. The Broward Health Heartburn Center offers advanced surgical treatments and endoscopic therapies. This specialized, multidisciplinary center provides treatment for a wide variety of conditions that cause heartburn before it progresses to more severe issues.
If you are experiencing reflux symptoms, it may mean the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) muscle in your esophagus is weak and allowing harmful acid and bile to enter the esophagus. The resulting burning sensation is heartburn. Over time, this acid and bile can wear away the esophagus lining, leading to inflammation and painful irritation.
A proper diagnostic test is the best way to identify the cause of any discomfort and choose the appropriate treatment plan. Diagnostic procedures available at Broward Health Coral Springs Heartburn Center include:
Barrett’s esophagus (the presence of precancerous tissue in the lower esophageal area)
Chest Pain
Chronic cough
Dental erosion
Esophageal cancer
Esophagitis
Hoarseness
Regurgitation
