Broward Health Imperial Point Awarded "LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Top Performer" Designation
Fort Lauderdale, Florida - Broward Health Imperial Point received high evaluation scores and the designation of LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Top Performer in the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's 15th anniversary edition of the Healthcare Equality Index (HEI), the nation’s foremost benchmarking survey of healthcare facilities on policies and practices dedicated to the equitable treatment and inclusion of LGBTQ+ patients, visitors and employees.
Additionally, Broward Health Medical Center and Broward Health North received a Foundational Policies designation.
“We are honored that Broward Health is recognized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation for its commitment to the respectful, equitable treatment of everyone in Broward County’s wonderfully diverse communities,” said Barry Gallison, vice president of clinical quality and risk management, Broward Health. “Sustaining an environment that welcomes our differences and unique contributions benefits us all.”
A record 906 healthcare facilities actively participated in the 2022 HEI survey and 251 of those earned an “LGBTQ+ Healthcare Equality Top Performer” designation.
Broward Health hospitals received the following high HEI scores out of a possible 100 points:
• Broward Health Imperial Point: 90
• Broward Health Medical Center: 80
• Broward Health North: 80
• Broward Health Coral Springs: 75
The HEI evaluates and scores healthcare facilities on detailed criteria falling under four central pillars: foundational policies and training in LGBTQ+ patient-centered care; LGBTQ+ patient services and support; employee benefits and policies; and patient and community engagement.
“Every person deserves to be respected and heard by their doctor and feel safe in the hospital,” said Tari Hanneman, director of health & aging at The Human Rights Campaign. “LGBTQ+ people are subject to discrimination in all spaces, including healthcare facilities, which leads to members of the community avoiding care and anticipating our voices will not be respected in an extremely vulnerable environment.”
