Broward Health Medical Center Launches Kidney Transplant Program

Fort Lauderdale, Florida -- The South Florida Transplant Center at Broward Health Medical Center has been approved for kidney transplants by the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS). The hospital will be offering patients kidney transplants from living donors or a deceased donor in addition to combined liver/kidney transplants.

“We are proud to expand our critical transplant services to include kidney transplants,” said Heather Havericak, CEO of Broward Health Medical Center. “As a nationally recognized provider of transplant care, the South Florida Transplant Center is committed to excellence and offering advanced level clinical care for the needs of our transplant patients and their families.”

The kidney transplant program will be led by transplant nephrologist Muhammad Mustafa, M.D., and abdominal transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon Joshua J. Shaw, M.D., who have both successfully performed hundreds of kidney transplants.

“We are honored to receive approval from UNOS to expand upon our liver transplant program,” said Mustafa, who is medical director of the kidney program. “We have a number of patients ready to be evaluated for transplantation and expect our first transplant in early 2021.”

According to the National Kidney Foundation, 100,000 people are waiting for a kidney transplant, said Shaw. “We hope to help in curbing that trend by offering life-saving kidney transplants to residents in the tri-county area and beyond.”

The combined liver and kidney transplant program at the South Florida Transplant Center includes a multidisciplinary team of transplant surgeons, transplant nephrologists, transplant hepatologists, transplant nurse coordinators, social workers, nutritionists, pharmacist and transplant financial coordinators.
